Camping in Banff National Park: In the fall of 1883, three Canadian Pacific Railway construction workers stumbled across a cave containing hot springs on the eastern slopes of Alberta's Rocky Mountains. From that humble beginning was born Banff National Park, Canada's first national park and the world's third. Spanning 6,641 square kilometres (2,564 square miles) of valleys, mountains, glaciers, forests, meadows and rivers, Banff National Park is one of the world's premier destination spots. In this huge park lies the charming town of Banff which was incorporated as a municipality in 1990 and covers about 4 square kilometres of the park. There are plenty of places to shop for all your camping needs, or to spend some time exploring its iconic hotels or enjoying one of the 70+ places to wine or dine. A little farther west of the town of Banff is Lake Louise, named after the Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. Lake Louise is a wonderful hamlet worth exploring; home to such great views as Moraine Lake (which used to be the image on the back of the Canadian $20 bill), and incredible hiking-some of which could include stops at the famous backcountry teahouses. (More info on teahouses ). Traveling from Lake Louise to our neighbour, Jasper National Park, is one of the most magnificent drives in the country-the Icefields Parkway!
